2-Day Sahara Tours

Two days is the default length of a Tunisian desert tour, and it is not an arbitrary package-holiday number. It is the shortest itinerary that can put you on sand from anywhere north of Gabès and still get you back to your hotel, and thirty-seven of the tours we track are built to that shape.

The decision that matters is not which two-day tour — most of them stop at the same three or four places — but which coast you leave from, because that changes what the two days are actually spent doing.

From the northern resorts, two days buys the desert at all

Hammamet, Sousse, Monastir and Tunis sit six to seven hours from the dunes. On a two-day run from there, day one is El Jem’s Roman amphitheatre in the morning, Matmata’s cave houses and the Sidi Driss hotel around lunch, and the camp or the hotel in the late afternoon. Day two is the salt pan at Chott el Jerid, an oasis stop, and the long road north.

The most-reviewed example is the Sahara Express, at $118 with a night in a tented camp at Sabria — 1,110 ratings at 4.7 out of 5, more than any other two-day tour here. Its own operator is unusually blunt about the trade-off in the listing: “this is quite a long excursion, with several hours of driving.” The TUI versions from Hammamet and Sousse run the same ground with hotel accommodation at $154 and $151.

From Djerba, two days buys time rather than access

Djerba is four hours from Ksar Hadada and the oasis at Ksar Ghilane, so a day trip already works from the island. What the overnight version adds is the part of the desert a day trip cannot reach: sunset, the camp, the dark, and sunrise.

It is also, counter-intuitively, the cheapest overnight tour on this site. The Djerba two-day 4x4 with a camp night runs at $48 — less than half the northern tours, because there is barely any transfer to pay for. It covers Tataouine’s market, Chenini, the Ksar Ghilane hot spring, a night on the sand, then Matmata and Toujane the next morning.

Camp or hotel — check before you book

Both get sold as “a night in the desert”. They are different nights.

A tented camp is a permanent site on the sand with fixed Bedouin tents, blankets, a dinner cooked over a fire, sand bread, and usually toilets and showers. You walk out of the tent into dunes. A hotel in Douz or Tozeur is a bed, a proper bathroom, and a twenty- minute drive to the sand in the morning.

Neither is wrong. If you are travelling with someone who will not sleep in a tent, the hotel tours are the ones to book, and the Sousse and Hammamet TUI itineraries are the best-reviewed of them. If the night itself is the point, the desert camping tours page lists only the ones that sleep on sand.

What a two-day tour will not do

It will not reach both halves of southern Tunisia. The Djerba tours cover Tataouine, the ksour and Ksar Ghilane; the northern tours cover El Jem, Matmata, the Chott and the western oases. Only a handful of two-day itineraries reach Mos Espa, and they are the ones that overnight near Tozeur — the Sousse and Monastir tour is the most-reviewed of those.

It also will not be leisurely. If long road legs are the thing you dread rather than the price, the three-day tours buy back the pace rather than adding a new landscape — that is exactly what the extra money is for.
