Djerba to the Sahara: Ksar Ghilane Day Trips, Desert Camps & Longer Routes

How a desert trip from Djerba works: the Ksar Ghilane day by 4x4, the two-day camp runs, Tataouine and Chenini or Matmata, when to add Douz and Tozeur, and shared or private.

Updated October 2026

Djerba is the one resort in Tunisia where the Sahara works as a day trip. Ksar Ghilane, an oasis with a warm spring on the edge of the dunes, is about four hours away by 4x4, so you can leave at 6am, swim in the spring and be back for a late dinner. Book the day trip if one afternoon in the desert is enough, a two-day camp run if you want the sunset and the night, and a longer route only if Tozeur and the mountain oases are on your list. The individual tours and prices are on Sahara tours from Djerba; this page covers how each trip runs and which to choose.

Quick take

Decide how much desert you want, then which direction. One day buys three hours at Ksar Ghilane with ksour stops on the way. Two days adds a sunset, a camp night and either Matmata or Tataouine and Chenini on the second day, and the cheapest two-day tour costs less than many day trips. Douz and Tozeur are a two-day trip of their own, with a hotel night. Keep it to one or two priorities; the south is large, and a day that tries to cover both Matmata and Tataouine spends most of its time in the car.

Key planning points

  • Why Djerba is such a good Sahara base. Four hours to the oasis, against six or more from the northern coast.
  • Ksar Ghilane day trip. The most-reviewed desert tour we track, $69 with lunch.
  • Two-day desert-camp itinerary. From $48, with a tent night and the hot spring.
  • Tataouine/Chenini vs Matmata. South to the ksour, or west to the cave houses.
  • When to add Douz or Tozeur. For the salt lake, the mountain oases and Mos Espa.
  • Shared vs private. A private jeep costs about three times a shared seat.

1. Why Djerba is such a good Sahara base

From Djerba you cross the Roman causeway to the mainland, and Ksar Ghilane is about four hours on. From Hammamet or Sousse the nearest dunes are six to seven hours away, which is why every tour from the northern coast is at least two days. Zarzis, on the coast opposite, shares the same departures, and pickups collect from hotels anywhere on the island between 6am and 7am.

Because the transfer is short, day trips cost $57 to $87, and a two-day camp run starts at $48. Timing is different too: on a day trip you arrive at the oasis around midday, when the dunes look flat and the light is hard, so the sunset and sunrise that make the desert memorable come only with a night out there.

What to check: the pickup window for your hotel, and the time you get back, usually ten to twelve hours later.

2. Ksar Ghilane day trip

The 4x4 day trip to Ksar Ghilane and Tataouine ($69, 4.8 from 1,849 reviews) is the most-reviewed desert tour in our catalogue. It stops for breakfast at Ghrabat, at Ksar Hadada and at Guermassa, then gives you three hours at Ksar Ghilane with lunch, over about ten hours. The ksour on the way are fortified granaries of stacked vaulted ghorfas, and Ksar Hadada stood in for part of Tatooine. They are worth seeing as southern Tunisian architecture first; Star Wars fans may want longer, and everyone else takes them in along the route.

Two other day trips go west through Matmata on the way to the spring:

Book the Ksar Ghilane and Tataouine day for the longest time at the oasis and the ksour, or the Matmata version if the cave houses matter more to you. Camel and quad rides at the oasis are extra on all three.

What to check: how long you get at the spring, and whether lunch is at the oasis. The last stretch is rough ground, and operators say the desert legs do not suit back problems.

3. Two-day desert-camp itinerary

A desert trip from Djerba pays off at night: the sunset over the dunes, a sky with no light pollution, and the sand at dawn before the day-trippers arrive.

  • The two-day 4x4 tour with a desert camp night ($48, 4.7 from 544 reviews) runs the Chahbania salt lake, Tataouine market and Chenini with lunch on day one, then a swim at Ksar Ghilane and a tent night with sand bread and dinner. Day two visits Matmata and Toujane and a Berber family in their cave house.
  • The sunset and sunrise desert tour with a tent night ($144, 4.7 from 611 reviews) picks up at about 11am, visits a ksar and the hot spring, and spends the trip on the sunset, the camp dinner with Bedouin music and the sunrise. You are back at your hotel late the next morning.

Pick the $48 camp tour to see the most in two days, or the sunset and sunrise tour if you would rather skip the 6am start and spend less time on the road. Our overnight desert camping guide covers the camp night itself.

What to check: the camp’s exact location, the bathroom setup and bedding, which meals are included, and whether camel or quad rides are in the price. Pick one ride; three in the same hour leaves no time to watch the light.

4. Tataouine/Chenini vs Matmata

Almost every trip from Djerba goes one of two ways. South takes you to Tataouine, the town that gave Tatooine its name, and the ksour around it, plus Chenini, a Berber village built in tiers up a ridge and still lived in. West takes you over the hills at Toujane to Matmata, where houses are dug into the ground around open pits and the Sidi Driss hotel has the room that was the Lars homestead in A New Hope. Both were homes long before they were film sets.

For the southern direction on its own, without the desert:

Choose south for the ksour and Chenini, west for the cave houses and the Star Wars hotel. If you want both and the desert too, the two-day camp tour is the one that covers all three. The Matmata guide and the Tataouine Star Wars tours page have more on each.

What to check: which ksar the tour visits, since several stand in the Tataouine area and only a few appear in the films.

5. When to add Douz or Tozeur

Add them when the salt lake, the mountain oases or the Mos Espa set are the reason for the trip. From Djerba they need two days with a hotel night, because Tozeur is about five hours’ drive west. These routes cross Chott el Jerid, visit Chebika and Tamerza in the mountains and stop at Douz for the dunes.

Both have few reviews, so compare the itineraries. Our Djerba or Tozeur guide covers whether to base yourself in Tozeur instead, and the Tozeur desert guide the town itself.

What to check: whether the hotel night is in Tozeur or Douz, and which meals are included.

6. Shared vs private

Compare what each tour includes, not only the headline price or the number of stops. Group size, the vehicle, the camp, meals and the optional camel or quad rides all change the cost and the comfort. A seat on a shared 4x4 day trip such as the Ksar Ghilane and Tataouine tour costs $69 with lunch. The private jeep tour to Tozeur costs $197 per person for two days, about three times a shared seat for the same number of days, and lets you set the stops.

Go private for a family, a photography trip or a tight schedule. Otherwise an extra day often does more for the trip than a private vehicle, because it removes the pressure to see each place in a few minutes. Several private listings from Djerba have one review or none yet, so we do not recommend them here.

What to check: the group size on a shared 4x4 and what the private price includes.

How long do you need?

One day is enough for Ksar Ghilane from Djerba. Two days gives you an overnight introduction, with the sunset, the camp and the sunrise. Three days or more suits a first comprehensive route that adds Tozeur and Douz to the ksour and the spring.

Best time to go

October to April is the desert season, with October and April the most comfortable. November and March have mild days, around 23°C in Tozeur on average, and many travellers find them the easiest months for sightseeing with a camp night, though nights fall to around 10°C. From December to February the camp nights get close to freezing. The best time for a Tunisia Sahara tour guide has the month-by-month detail.

Self-drive or organised tour?

Djerba, Medenine, Tataouine, Matmata and Douz are all on paved roads, but genuine dune tracks and remote camps should be handled with suitable vehicles and local expertise.

For a short two- or three-day trip, an organised route is often more efficient: one booking covers the 4x4, the guide, lunch and the ksour stops. Self-driving becomes more attractive when you have four or more days and want to control photography stops, meal times and nights in different bases.

What to pack

  • Comfortable closed shoes
  • Lightweight trousers and breathable tops
  • Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
  • Scarf for wind and sand
  • Water bottle
  • Power bank
  • Warm layer for desert evenings
  • Small overnight bag if camping
  • Swimwear and towel for Ksar Ghilane

Frequently asked questions

Is this worth adding to a first Tunisia Sahara trip?

Yes. From Djerba the desert costs one day, not two, and the Ksar Ghilane day trip gives you the dunes, the spring and the ksour for $69. The usual mistake is trying to include every famous southern place in too little time.

How many days should I allow?

One day for a Ksar Ghilane excursion, two for an overnight in the desert, and three or more for a broader circuit with Tozeur and Douz.

Do I need a 4x4?

Not for the main roads and towns. The day trips to Ksar Ghilane use 4x4s because part of the route runs on rough desert tracks, and the remote camps need local vehicles to reach them.

Is one desert night enough?

For most first-time visitors, yes. One night gives you sunset, darkness and sunrise, which are the main reasons to stay.

What is the best season?

October to April, with October and April the most comfortable for a camp night. Pack a warm layer from November to March.

Final planning advice

Start with the thing you care about most. If that is dunes and camping, protect the evening in the desert with a two-day camp tour. If it is oases and Star Wars, give Tozeur or Matmata enough time. If it is convenience, take the Ksar Ghilane day trip from Djerba and do not add a cross-country route. A shorter list of stops usually makes the better Sahara trip.
