Sahara Tours from Hammamet

Hammamet is about 450km from the nearest dunes, and that single number decides everything about desert tours from this coast. There is no honest day trip. Anything sold as one would be twelve hours of coach for an hour of sand, and no operator on GetYourGuide offers it — every Sahara tour that leaves Hammamet is at least two days.

The upside is that the two-day format from here is very well developed, and the route it takes is the best introduction to southern Tunisia there is.

What the two days cover

Day one goes south down the coast road. The first proper stop is El Jem, where the third-century Roman amphitheatre still stands nearly whole — bigger than anything else in North Africa and the reason the town exists on any itinerary. From there the road turns inland to Matmata, where Berber houses are dug down into the ground around open courtyards and one of them, the Sidi Driss hotel, played the Lars homestead interior in A New Hope. Lunch is usually there.

The afternoon ends in the desert: a camp on the sand south of Douz on the small-operator tours, a hotel in Douz or Tozeur on the TUI one.

Day two crosses Chott el Jerid, the salt pan that shimmers into mirage by mid-morning, picks up a mountain oasis such as Chebika, and runs north again through Kairouan, whose medina is UNESCO-listed.

Which Hammamet tour to book

Three are worth comparing.

The TUI two-day tour with accommodation at $154 is the Hammamet-specific listing rather than a multi-resort pickup, with 345 reviews at 4.4. It is a coach itinerary with a multilingual guide and hotel accommodation, which is the right choice if a tent is not on the table.

The Sahara Express at $118 collects in Hammamet as well as Tunis and Sousse, sleeps in a tented camp at Sabria, and carries 1,110 reviews at 4.7 — more ratings than any other desert tour in our catalogue. It is also the one whose operator warns openly about the driving.

The two-day tour with a tent night at $174 is a smaller local operation covering the same ground with a camp night and a Berber family visit at Matmata.

If you would rather not do the whole run in two days, three-day itineraries collect from Hammamet too and spend the extra day in the dunes rather than on the road.

The early start is not negotiable

Pickups run from about 5am. It is the part of these tours that surprises people most, and it is arithmetic rather than operator preference: El Jem is four hours away and nobody wants to walk an unshaded Roman arena at midday in September.
