The Experience
Djerba holds the hotels, so Djerba holds the jeeps — and the south-eastern cluster of sets is four hours away.
Two directions, one long day, and the detail that separates near-identical listings.
West is Matmata and the Sidi Driss cave hotel. South is Tataouine, Ksar Hadada and Chenini. A handful of twelve-hour tours manage both; most do one.
Plenty of island listings mention Star Wars without stopping at a set. Sidi Driss, Sidi Idriss, Ksar Hadada and Ksar Ouled Soltane are the names to look for in the itinerary.
Sidi Driss and several ksour charge admission. Tours differ on whether that is in the price, and the gap is often worth more than the difference in fares.
Pickups run 6am to 7am and these are long days over rough ground. Ask about seating if you are tall — reviewers who gave five stars still name the back row as the rough one.

FROM HAMMAMETTUI's two-day Sahara tour out of Hammamet, with accommodation, the El Jem amphitheatre, Matmata's cave houses and a crossing of Chott el Jerid.
Choosing on the Island
The sets are the same; the length, the entry fees and the direction are not.
Djerba has the deepest bench of Star Wars day trips in Tunisia, and the reason is unglamorous: the island holds the package hotels, so the island holds the jeeps. Forty-nine of the tours we track leave from Djerba or Zarzis, and the south-eastern cluster of filming locations sits about four hours away across the Dahar.
What the island cannot reach is Mos Espa. That set is 250km further west and belongs to Tozeur. Everything below is the other cluster.
Go west and you reach Matmata, where the houses are dug down into the ground around open pits, and Hotel Sidi Driss still has the sunken room that was the Lars homestead interior in 1977 and again in 2002. Tours in this direction usually continue to Ksar Ghilane, which is not a filming location and is the stop most guests end up talking about.
Go south and you reach Tataouine — the town that gave the planet its name — and the ksour around it. Ksar Hadada and Ksar Ouled Soltane are fortified granaries, honeycombs of vaulted cells stacked several storeys round a courtyard; Hadada played the Mos Espa slave quarters in The Phantom Menace. That direction also picks up Chenini, a Berber village built into a cliff and still inhabited, which is not a set and is the stop reviewers praise most.
Most day tours do one direction or the other. The twelve-hour ones do both, at the cost of being twelve-hour ones.
Several of the shared day trips sit within a few dollars of each other, so compare the things that are not the fare.
Entry fees. Sidi Driss and the ksour charge admission. A $57 tour that includes entry is doing more than a $50 tour that does not, and listings vary here more than on price.
Length. The southern day runs anywhere from nine to twelve hours at similar money. The shorter versions get there by trimming photo halts rather than sites.
Which ksar. Hadada and Ouled Soltane are different buildings with similar credits, and you rarely get both on a shared itinerary. Ouled Soltane is the one most people photograph; Hadada reads more like a village.
Vehicle. A 4x4 with a small group can change the plan on the day. A coach cannot, but it is much easier on a twelve-hour back.
The Sahara Dream Tour at $83 is the most complete single day: Matmata, the Tataouine ksour and the sets between them, with a Berber dinner in a cave house and the last hour on sand at sunset — 4.8 from 24 reviews.
The Tataouine, Chenini and Berber day tour at $57 is the best-reviewed southern run at 289 ratings. The small-group Ksar Ghilane and Matmata 4x4 at $69 is the best of the western ones, and pairs Sidi Driss with the oasis.
If a whole day in a jeep is not appealing, the guided Tataouine and Chenini tour covers the same southern ground on sealed roads.

"Very good day with our driver and live guide Mefeah. Great day with the desert, the scenery, and the Sahara. I recommend this experience! Super nice, welcoming, and pleasant."

"Mefdah picked us up at our hotel front desk with a great vibe. We made beautiful memories together with other guests. I recommend the quad tour as an additional activity. There you can ride into the sunset in the Sahara and take beautiful pictures. After that, we went swimming in the Oasis, and the ride home was also very pleasant. Overall 10/10"
"For security reasons and after consultation, the excursion began 3 hours later than planned due to the intense heat and lasted about 12 hours. Our driver Meftah told us a lot of interesting things about the island and culture during the trip and also entertained us with local music and videos. The highlight was a quad bike ride through the Sahara into the sunset. We also stopped at other locations (salt desert, cave village/Berber culture, etc.), and a German-speaking guide provided us with explanations. In addition to the culture, we also saw a lot of the Tunisian landscape. The evening ended with a Tunisian meal and a ceremony in which we were also involved. It was an extraordinary, unforgettable day. The only drawback is that we would have liked to spend more time at one or the other place, in the oasis for swimming. But the route was too long for that. With today's experience, we would do this excursion over 2 days with an overnight stay."

"Adam was a wonderful guide, full of knowledge and a great driver. I would recommend this trip to everyone"
"Got lots of nice new impressions. + The variety on this day is great. + The food was great. + Nasser, our guide, drove us safely through the desert and back. + The quad tour was great and the sunset was impressive. - The tour was not available in German. - The quad tour is a must and has to be paid for separately; otherwise, you won't see the sunset. We had a great day. Highly recommended. Don't forget your swimming trunks! You can swim in the oasis! Back at 12:30 AM!"

"Great experience, definitely worth doing. A top-notch live guide who is attentive and very helpful."
"A very nice day trip. Rostom always took great care of us, was very considerate, and made it possible for us to have a great day. Don't miss the quad at Ksar Ghilene. We highly recommend this tour and don't hesitate to ask for Rostom."
"Our guides, Rostom and Maher, were truly the best of the best! We had a wonderful day with them. They explained this magnificent tour to us well, didn't hesitate to adapt to our needs and wishes, to stop frequently for photos and little surprises, and we had a magical time!! Our 2 guides (there were 7 of us, so 2 cars) came to pick us up at 10:00 AM from our hotel in Djerba. Note that lunch is included! They were punctual, and the vehicles are new and very comfortable! A sublime experience with attentive and trustworthy guides! Go for it!!!"

Which sets the island reaches, how long the days are, and what is included.
The south-eastern cluster: Hotel Sidi Driss at Matmata, Ksar Hadada north of Tataouine, and the ksour around Tataouine. Mos Espa is 250km west on the far side of Chott el Jerid and is not a day trip from the island.
Nine to twelve hours, with pickups between 6am and 7am from anywhere on Djerba or in Zarzis. The twelve-hour versions are the ones that cover both Matmata and the Tataouine ksour in a single day.
Not always. Sidi Driss and several of the ksour charge admission, and listings vary on this more than they vary on price — a $57 tour that covers entry is doing more than a $50 tour that does not.
The Sahara Dream Tour at $83 is the most complete single day — Matmata, the Tataouine ksour, the sets between them and a Berber dinner in a cave house, rated 4.8 from 24 guests. For the southern direction alone, the Tataouine, Chenini and Berber day tour at $57 has 289 reviews.
For flexibility, yes — a small group in a 4x4 can change plan for the light or the weather. For a twelve-hour day on tarmac, a coach is easier on your back. Both reach the eastern sets.
That is what most island itineraries do. The Ksar Ghilane tours pair a filming location with a real Sahara oasis, which is why they outsell the pure film-location days.
