"This was our second tour in a row with a great guide, Mr. Montana. As usual, with his obvious passion, he shared a wealth of knowledge with us with a smile on his face. It's always a shame to part with people like him, but I highly recommend him!"

The Experience
Granaries stacked four storeys high, a cliff village still lived in, and the set that played the Mos Espa slave quarters.
One long day out of Djerba or Zarzis, and what fills it.
Tours leave the island at 6am or 7am and stop at the Chahbania salt lake while the light is still low. It is a five-minute photo halt that everyone remembers.
Tataouine's market is a working one rather than a tourist one, and most itineraries give you free time in it. Haggling is expected.
The village is built in tiers up a ridge and the path to the old mosque is steep and uneven. Proper shoes matter here more than anywhere else on these tours.
Ksar Hadada and Ksar Ouled Soltane are different buildings and shared tours rarely include both. Ouled Soltane is the photogenic one; Hadada is the one with the film credit.

FROM HAMMAMETTUI's two-day Sahara tour out of Hammamet, with accommodation, the El Jem amphitheatre, Matmata's cave houses and a crossing of Chott el Jerid.
The Ksour of the Dahar
Fortified granaries, a cliff village, and one film credit that made the name famous.
Tataouine gave the planet Tatooine its name, and that is the smallest interesting thing about it. The town sits at the centre of the Dahar, the stone plateau running south from Matmata, and the country around it holds the ksour: fortified communal granaries built of mud brick and palm beams, their storage cells — ghorfas — stacked three and four storeys around a courtyard.
Several are still standing. One of them has a film credit.
Ksar Ouled Soltane, south of the town, is the best preserved and the one most people photograph: two courtyards of vaulted cells, the upper storeys reached by stairs pegged into the wall. Ksar Hadada, to the north, is looser and more village-like, and it is the one that played the Mos Espa slave quarters in The Phantom Menace — the courtyard where Qui-Gon Jinn talks with Shmi Skywalker.
Chenini is the other half of the day and the part reviewers praise most. It is a Berber village built in tiers up a steep ridge with a white mosque on the crest and granary cells cut into the rock above the houses, and people still live in it. The climb is genuine; wear something with grip.
Several itineraries also take in Douiret or Guermassa, half-abandoned ridge villages of the same kind.
All of these are day trips from Djerba or Zarzis — there is no meaningful accommodation base in Tataouine itself for short-stay visitors, and the town is four hours from the island.
The Tataouine, Chenini and Berber day tour at $57 is the best-reviewed at 289 ratings: a 7am start, the Chahbania salt lake at first light, free time in the market, a guided walk through Chenini and a traditional lunch.
The guided Tataouine and Chenini full-day tour at the same price is the coach-based alternative for anyone who would rather not spend a day in a jeep, with 157 reviews.
The most-reviewed desert tour in our catalogue at $69 includes Ksar Hadada and Guermassa on its way to Ksar Ghilane — the right pick if you want a ksar and the Sahara in one day rather than the ksour in depth.
The twelve-hour Sahara Dream Tour at $83 pairs Tataouine with Matmata, which is the fullest single day available from the island.
The ksour and Chenini charge admission, and tours differ on whether it is included. On a $57 day trip that difference is worth more than the fare gap between listings.
And the Star Wars content here is real but narrow. Ksar Hadada is a genuine location; Ksar Ouled Soltane is not, though it is frequently photographed as though it were. If the sets are your reason for coming, read the filming-locations guide before you pick — and note that Mos Espa is 250km west.

"Great day trip with a live guide, Montana, who was very friendly, and a driver, Ameur, who talked to us about Tunisia while driving, which made the car rides seem shorter."
"Great experience! Our live guide "Montana" and our driver Walid were excellent. It was an incredible day: the food tasting was delicious, the Berber village was amazing, and the meal was a treat. I would definitely recommend it. It was a very enriching day with beautiful scenery."

"Great live guide. A very good, pleasant, and very cheerful guide. Nothing to complain about. As for our driver, Rafyk, he was excellent. Thank you for this day."
"Wonderful excursion – highly recommended! We were traveling as a family of four and had a great day. Positive: - Punctual pick-up & great organization - Plenty of stops for the restroom and water - Huge thank you to our fantastic guide Tutu! - Highlight: Exploring the history of Chenini with a local Berber guide - Ksar Hadada is a must-see for Star Wars fans! - Enough time in Tatouine and Chenini - Good food and no surprise quad or camel tours imposed Minor drawbacks: - Car designed for 5 passengers; the last row is a bit uncomfortable on longer trips - Drinks with meals cost 5 dinars and can only be paid for in cash Despite the small details, a clear recommendation for families!"

"The day trip was very good. Momo is a great live guide who explains things well and takes his time. Very nice. Great day trip with beautiful scenery. Remember to bring cash..."

The ksour, the climb at Chenini, and which tour covers what.
A fortified communal granary. Storage cells called ghorfas, built of mud brick and palm beams, are stacked three and four storeys around a courtyard. Ksar Ouled Soltane south of Tataouine is the best preserved; Ksar Hadada to the north is the one with the Star Wars credit.
Ksar Hadada played the Mos Espa slave quarters in The Phantom Menace — the courtyard where Qui-Gon Jinn talks with Shmi Skywalker — and the town gave the planet Tatooine its name. Ksar Ouled Soltane is frequently photographed as a location but was not one.
The village is built in tiers up a steep ridge and the path to the old white mosque is uneven. It is the one stop on these tours where footwear matters. Everything else in the day is gentle.
Djerba and Zarzis, four hours away — there is no practical short-stay base in Tataouine itself. Pickups run 6am to 7am and the first stop is usually the Chahbania salt lake at first light.
The ksour and Chenini charge admission and tours differ on whether it is in the price. On a $57 day trip that difference is worth more than the gap between fares, so read the inclusions.
The Tataouine, Chenini and Berber day tour at $57 is the best-reviewed at 289 ratings. The guided full-day tour at the same price is the coach-based alternative.
