About This Experience

This is the tour that does the most with a single day out of Djerba. You leave the island before sunrise, cross the causeway the Romans built to the mainland, and spend the morning climbing gently onto the Dahar — the stone plateau where the ksour sit.

Breakfast is at Ghrabat. The first real stop is Ksar Hadada, the stacked mud-brick granary north of Tataouine that stood in for the Mos Espa slave quarters in The Phantom Menace; you get about 35 minutes there with a guide. Guermassa, a half-abandoned Berber village on a ridge, follows.

The afternoon belongs to Ksar Ghilane. Three hours is a genuinely generous stop: long enough to swim in the spring-fed pool, walk out to the dunes, and take the optional camel or quad ride that most people end up taking. Lunch at a traditional restaurant is included, as is round-trip transport in an air-conditioned vehicle and tour insurance.

Guides work in English, French, Italian and Arabic. It is a long day on rough ground in places, and the operator asks that pregnant travellers choose something gentler.
