From Djerba & Zarzis: Tataouine, Chenini & Berber Day Tour

About This Experience
This is the cultural half of southern Tunisia rather than the sand — the country of fortified granaries and hill villages that gave Tatooine its name.
You leave Djerba or Zarzis at 7am, cross the Roman road, and stop at the Chahbania salt lake while the light is still low. Tataouine comes next, with free time in a market where haggling is expected.
Chenini is the centrepiece: a Berber village stacked up a ridge around a white mosque, with the ruins of its ksar above and the granary cells still visible in the rock. Lunch is traditional, and the return crosses the plateau in the late afternoon.

What Travelers Say

This was our second tour in a row with a great guide, Mr. Montana. As usual, with his obvious passion, he shared a wealth of knowledge with us with a smile on his face. It's always a shame to part with people like him, but I highly recommend him!

Great day trip with a live guide, Montana, who was very friendly, and a driver, Ameur, who talked to us about Tunisia while driving, which made the car rides seem shorter.
— Christelle, Septemb
Great experience! Our live guide "Montana" and our driver Walid were excellent. It was an incredible day: the food tasting was delicious, the Berber village was amazing, and the meal was a treat. I would definitely recommend it. It was a very enriching day with beautiful scenery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this tour go into the Sahara?
Not to the dunes. It covers the ksour and Berber villages of the Dahar plateau. For sand and the hot spring, look at the Ksar Ghilane tours.
Why is Tataouine connected to Star Wars?
The planet Tatooine takes its name from the town. The ksour around it — Ksar Hadada, Ksar Ouled Soltane — were used as sets in The Phantom Menace.
How much walking is involved?
Chenini is built on a slope and the climb to the old mosque is steep and uneven. Wear proper shoes; the rest of the day is gentle.
Is lunch included?
Yes, a traditional Berber lunch is included. Drinks and purchases in the market are not.
