From Hammamet: 2-Day Tunisian Sahara Tour w/ Accommodation

4.4 (345 verified reviews)

About This Experience

Hammamet is about seven hours from the sand, which is why there is no honest day trip from this coast — the shortest format that reaches the desert is two days with a night in the south, and this is the most-reviewed example of it.

The route is the standard southern loop: the Roman amphitheatre at El Jem, the troglodyte houses at Matmata with their Star Wars connection, an overnight in the south, and the salt-pan crossing at Chott el Jerid with the oases beyond it.

Accommodation, transport and meals as listed are included. It is operated by TUI Tunisia, so it runs to a fixed schedule with a multilingual guide rather than as a small-group jeep trip.

  • Experience Roman Tunisia on a guided tour of the Amphitheatre of El Jem

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.4/5 by 345 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

The facilitators were excellent. We had a great day and a lot of fun. It was a wonderful experience.

— Christel, August

The jeep tour was the highlight. The mix of culture and fun was excellent. The only criticism: With the air conditioning on in the bus, the guide was barely understandable. Conclusion: An impressive package and a vacation highlight.

I cannot recommend this trip enough! I mainly booked the trip to visit the two Star Wars sets. They were amazing! You get to visit the Lars homestead from A New Hope and the prequels on day one. Then on day two you visit Mos Espa and the setting for the pod race. But the trip was so much more. The amphitheater is up there with the Colosseum in Rome. The visit to the local Berber family is eye opening. You are also treated to some lovely hotels for food and accommodation. The biggest highlight was riding through the Sahara on a camel at sunset. It’s an extra 50 Dinar (£12.50), which is a ridiculous price for a truly amazing experience. Book this trip. You will not regret it!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you do a Sahara day trip from Hammamet?

Not realistically. The dunes are roughly seven hours' drive each way, so a single day would be almost entirely road. Two days is the shortest format that reaches the sand.

Is accommodation included?

Yes — one night's accommodation is part of the price, along with transport and the meals listed in the inclusions.

How early does it leave Hammamet?

Around 5am. It is a long first day; the operator's own advice is to sleep on the coach between stops.

What should I bring?

An overnight bag rather than a suitcase, warm layers for the desert night from November to March, sunglasses and sunscreen, and cash for drinks and tips.
