Hammamet is about seven hours from the sand, which is why there is no honest day trip from this coast — the shortest format that reaches the desert is two days with a night in the south, and this is the most-reviewed example of it.

The route is the standard southern loop: the Roman amphitheatre at El Jem, the troglodyte houses at Matmata with their Star Wars connection, an overnight in the south, and the salt-pan crossing at Chott el Jerid with the oases beyond it.

I cannot recommend this trip enough! I mainly booked the trip to visit the two Star Wars sets. They were amazing! You get to visit the Lars homestead from A New Hope and the prequels on day one. Then on day two you visit Mos Espa and the setting for the pod race. But the trip was so much more. The amphitheater is up there with the Colosseum in Rome. The visit to the local Berber family is eye opening. You are also treated to some lovely hotels for food and accommodation. The biggest highlight was riding through the Sahara on a camel at sunset. It’s an extra 50 Dinar (£12.50), which is a ridiculous price for a truly amazing experience. Book this trip. You will not regret it!
